Do you know a Do Gooder in Brooklyn?

August 18th, 2010 by Jenna Silverman

Our friends and neighbors over at the Brooklyn Community Foundation have just announced an open call for nominations for its annual Do Gooder awards. From now through September 30, 2010, the larger Brooklyn community (including us in DUMBO) is invited to submit nominations online for those who they believe best embody the Foundation’s motto (and tagline developed by us!) to “Do Good Right Here.” Nominees should display an outstanding sense of giving back locally–with time, talent, or charity.

Nominate a Do Gooder

The Do Gooders are a chance to show a little love for fellow Brooklynites and celebrate the altruism, philanthropy and commitment of five individuals who are working toward a stronger Brooklyn. The categories include: Arts for All, Caring Neighbors, Community Development, Education and Youth Achievement, and Green Communities. Public voting for the twenty finalists (each finalist represents one field of interest) will be open the first two weeks in October. The Brooklyn Community Foundation will then donate $5,000 to a Brooklyn based nonprofit or a Brooklyn Community Foundation Field of Interest Fund of choice, in honor of each of the five winners.

Winners will be recognized at the Brooklyn Does Good event on November 3 at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Palm House, where they will also celebrate the Foundation’s first anniversary since its re-launch as a public charity.

This is a great opportunity to nominate a friend, colleague, or neighbor for the great work they are doing to give back to Brooklyn. You can also “like” the awards and  join their “Brooklyn Do Gooders” group on Facebook or follow the campaign on Twitter @DoGoodBklyn and #DoGooder.

Did you know that if Brooklyn were its own city it’d be the fourth largest in America? Of course you did.

We Ducks love Brooklyn – and now we’ve got another reason. Last week, the Brooklyn Community Foundation officially launched- and were were delighted to be a part of it. For the past several months, we’ve been working with Brooklyn Community Foundation staff and consultants to develop a visual identity, tagline (’Do Good Right Here’), website, and launch collateral for Brooklyn’s first community foundation.

Their mission is to improve the lives of people in Brooklyn by strengthening communities through local giving, grantmaking and community service. We’re delighted to be a part of it and look forward to seeing their excellent mission come to life!

A Bridge, But Not Too Far

August 20th, 2009 by Dan Gunderman

The Big Duck offices are in Brooklyn. Almost all of the Ducks live in Brooklyn. Two of them were even born and raised in Brooklyn. There’s a lot of Brooklyn pride around here.

I live in Queens. And I love Queens. My colleagues are always extolling the virtues of Brooklyn, and I often find myself thinking—and occasionally saying—things like, “You know, I don’t need to travel to the bowels of Brooklyn. We do actually have a cheese shop in Queens.”

Who are you serving, anyway?

July 28th, 2009 by Dan Gunderman

A few days ago, I wandered over to the Dumbo General Store for my afternoon coffee, and an outgoing fellow at the bar (yes, it’s also a bar and, even though I’m a writer, I drink coffee, not liquor) asked me if I was a regular. When I said that I was, he revealed that he was a reporter for The Brooklyn Paper and asked me what I thought of the new sign out front.

I had noticed the sign but hadn’t actually given it much thought. The old sign had said, “Café Bar” and looked very homemade. The new one actually said, “Dumbo General Store.” In my mind, this was an improvement since it actually let people know where they were. And I said as much.

A Tagline that Goes Door-to-Door

View from my desk

My desk at Big Duck features a lovely view of The Watchtower in Brooklyn.  If you don’t know The Watchtower, it’s home to the Jehovah’s Witnesses.  More specifically, it is the national headquarters for their magazine publication.  The property is a sprawling compound (called Bethel by the insiders), several buildings and blocks large, and the J-Dubs cover a good chunk of Dumbo, living amongst the nouveau riche that otherwise populate the neighborhood.
