2009 Nonprofit Tagline award winners announced

October 27th, 2009 by Sarah Durham

Could any of the following taglines be used by your organization?

Big Sky. Big Land. Big History.
Building community deep in the hearts of Texans
Holding Power Accountable
A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste
Because the earth needs a good lawyer
If you want to be remembered, do something memorable.
Finding a cure now…so our daughters won’t have to.
Filling pantries. Filling lives.
Send a Net. Save a Life.
Nothing Stops A Bullet Like A Job
Telling stories that make a difference
Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors.
A head for business. A heart for the world.

Chances are, the answer is no. A great tagline expresses the big idea behind an organization simply and effectively, in a way that is as unique as possible.

My friend and colleague Nancy Schwartz has, yet again, done a terrific job increasing visibility for this oft-overlooked but powerful communications tool–the nonprofit tagline. To find the organization behind these winning taglines, check out Nancy’s blog here.

Did you know that if Brooklyn were its own city it’d be the fourth largest in America? Of course you did.

We Ducks love Brooklyn – and now we’ve got another reason. Last week, the Brooklyn Community Foundation officially launched- and were were delighted to be a part of it. For the past several months, we’ve been working with Brooklyn Community Foundation staff and consultants to develop a visual identity, tagline (’Do Good Right Here’), website, and launch collateral for Brooklyn’s first community foundation.

Their mission is to improve the lives of people in Brooklyn by strengthening communities through local giving, grantmaking and community service. We’re delighted to be a part of it and look forward to seeing their excellent mission come to life!

My desk at Big Duck features a lovely view of The Watchtower in Brooklyn.  If you don’t know The Watchtower, it’s home to the Jehovah’s Witnesses.  More specifically, it is the national headquarters for their magazine publication.  The property is a sprawling compound (called Bethel by the insiders), several buildings and blocks large, and the J-Dubs cover a good chunk of Dumbo, living amongst the nouveau riche that otherwise populate the neighborhood.
