The “Donate” button is not enough

December 2nd, 2009 by Farra Trompeter

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of being on a panel at NTEN’s 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference titled, “Why The Donate Button Isn’t Enough: Designing program-centric appeals online.” The panel featured a great case study from Trout Unlimited, as well as the advice and pearls of wisdom from myself and two other consultants from Watershed Company and Northridge Interactive.

Together, Amanda, Steve, Will and I offered some pointers about:
* How to engage site visitors — leading them to learn more and motivate them to give
* Ways to develop compelling appeals tied to your mission
* Hallmarks of a great online appeal
* New ideas to spruce up your site based on a critique of others

If your organization is looking to increase the money it raises online (especially in this magical holiday season), you may want to watch this session. The good folks at CauseCast.org were kind enough to simulcast it for your viewing pleasure.

Did you know that if Brooklyn were its own city it’d be the fourth largest in America? Of course you did.

We Ducks love Brooklyn – and now we’ve got another reason. Last week, the Brooklyn Community Foundation officially launched- and were were delighted to be a part of it. For the past several months, we’ve been working with Brooklyn Community Foundation staff and consultants to develop a visual identity, tagline (’Do Good Right Here’), website, and launch collateral for Brooklyn’s first community foundation.

Their mission is to improve the lives of people in Brooklyn by strengthening communities through local giving, grantmaking and community service. We’re delighted to be a part of it and look forward to seeing their excellent mission come to life!

A cornucopia of nonprofit communications | Weekly Roundup

September 25th, 2009 by Elizabeth Ricca

What an abundance of interesting links this week related to nonprofit communications. Must be harvest season.

  • All of the posts this week in NTEN’s fundraising series were so more-ish, I couldn’t choose just one. And frankly, I don’t think I should have to.
  • A great post from a former employee of the Obama campaign’s design team on how to craft and maintain an excellent website. One critical point: once the website goes live, the design work isn’t necessarily over. To keep it looking sharp, you’ll need ongoing design support.
  • In all your communications—fundraising or advocacy; online or off—choosing the right channels to reach your audience can be the difference between success and failure. This post from Wild Apricot highlights a great worksheet that can help you decide what media (print, online, social) and which tools (postcards, websites, social networks) will be most effective in helping you achieve your communications goals.
  • Fast Company shares mini case studies of five nonprofits breaking new ground in fundraising with creative Twitter strategies.
  • Is your nonprofit using LinkedIn? Even though it doesn’t generate as much excitement in the nonprofit community as Facebook or Twitter, LinkedIn is a fast-growing networking tool with some interesting possibilities for nonprofits. If you haven’t checked it out yet, here are a few ideas for how getting started.
