Selling Yourself Short: Thoughts on Nicknames and Nonprofit Acronyms

This blog post was written by our Copy Intern, Katherine Lindstedt. You can follow her on Twitter @kmlindstedt.

As a Katherine known to close friends and family as a Katie, I’ve long struggled with feeling like I’ve outgrown my nickname but haven’t yet grown into my full name. I often wonder how things would have played out for me (especially during high school) had my mom gotten the go-ahead from Dad to christen me Jennifer.

Why you shouldn’t rebrand as you build that new website

Most young nonprofits brand themselves by accident. Money’s tight, time’s limited, and so decisions are made quickly (and sometimes foolishly) about what the organization’s name and tagline should be, how the logo should look, etc.

At some point downstream, maybe five or ten years later, you’ve got a staff, an engaged board, even a water cooler and a fancy machine that makes lattes in the office. But still, that fly-by-night brand hangs on… and people start grumbling.

For Rebrand's Sake

One of the things that I enjoy about telling people where I work is the ability to say the words "Big Duck." As in, "you actually work in a place called Big Duck?" In fact, I remember the first time my father-in-law needed to send something to the office, and he heard our agency name for the first time. I believe his exact words were "that's the name of your company?" And then he chuckled.
