Because it doesn't write itself.

Why I work at Big Duck:

Good causes, good co-workers, good clients... why wouldn't I work at Big Duck?

What I think is just ducky:

Watermelons and well-crafted sentences.

What really ruffles my feathers:

You know how soda is advertised in a way that makes you assume that 20 ounces is one serving size? But the nutritional information on the label says that one serving size is eight ounces? Golly, that gets me steamed.

Life before Big Duck:

I grew up in Housatonic, Massachusetts, with every intention of playing shortstop in the Major Leagues. Instead, I write. But like the poet Marianne Moore says, "Writing is exciting / and baseball is like writing." I've taught writing at UMass, Marlboro College, and The Putney School Summer Programs; developed educational materials for Colonial Williamsburg (I'm writing a book about Jamestown); written speeches for United States Artists; published lots of fiction, poetry, and essays; developed a writing game and teaching tool called The Storymatic... okay, so maybe none of that is as exciting maybe as a bases-clearing triple, but it's close.

Ask me about:

Baseball history, ditransitive verbs, and gardening
